Porthleven
The harbour town of Porthleven is the most southerly port in the United Kingdom!
Historically the port has provided a much-needed respite for ships braving the prevailing westerly winds and treacherous seas. The coastline is a particular black spot for shipwrecks with Loe Bar laying claim to many stricken vessels.
A favourite with keen walkers, Porthleven is perfectly placed for exploring the magnificent coastline of this scenic corner of Cornwall. Coastal walks take you along rugged clifftops with the Atlantic as your backdrop.
Porthleven's most recognisable landmark is the Bickford-Smith Institute which is next to the pier and harbour entrance. With a tower of about 70 foot in height, it has the appearance of a church but currently is used as a snooker club and houses the town council offices. Many spectacular photographs have been taken in stormy conditions showing the waves crashing into the sea wall and over the 70ft tower.
Apart from the beautiful stretch of beach, Porthleven has a fantastic selection of gift shops and galleries and has now become a first-class “foodie” destination with some excellent restaurants and cafes.
Throughout the season there are various events taking place including the Porthleven Food Festival, weekly gig racing and Lifeboat Day as well as live entertainment in the pubs and our own Porthleven Town Band playing on the harbour throughout the summer months.
